Ask The Experts: Multiple Domain Names?

on August 8, 2016

Our team of digital marketing experts has implemented a weekly series, Ask the Experts, dedicated to answering dealers’ questions regarding L2TMedia’s solutions and best practices. The success of our dealerships is our number one priority and we know that many of our clients have questions when it comes to what we do. So ask away!

Is it beneficial to point multiple domains to a single website?

Business owners who are concerned about protecting their brand often buy every possible domain extension for their URL (.com, .co, .net, .org, etc.). Other webmasters may purchase domains with relevant keywords in hopes of cornering a market and driving more traffic to their site. Either way, just because you can point many domains to your business’ website, does not mean you should.

Purchasing multiple URLs and redirecting them to your website is considered a spamming tactic in Google’s eyes. This tactic is seen as a way to try and manipulate search engines, which goes directly against Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. Using multiple domain names or extensions could potentially dilute your content and your website, ultimately causing Google to drop your site from search engine results pages.

Instead of going through this trouble and potentially being penalized, we encourage our dealers to concentrate their SEO efforts on one domain. Serving up fresh, original content on this one domain is more valuable to potential car-buyers and for search engine purposes.
