External Linking: Increase Your SEO Mojo

on September 18, 2017

Our team of digital marketing experts has implemented a weekly series, Ask the Experts, dedicated to answering dealers’ questions regarding L2TMedia’s solutions and best practices. The success of our dealerships is our number one priority and we know that many of our clients have questions when it comes to what we do. So ask away!

“Don’t be silly. I’m going to link to someone else, my content should only get people to my own site.”

This kind of thinking about external linking is not far off from what many believe when it comes to providing value for your site. We understand that many people or clients may think this way, but we have some reasons why you should change your mindset on this way of thinking.

SEO is an art that involves authority, especially through linking which is one of Google’s top three signals for ranking. You can do a search for “external linking seo” and find that as far back as 2009, external linking has been considered beneficial.

Search Engine Journal cites a study done by Moz that analyzed Moz’s advice from 2009 that external links are good. Does it hold true today? The short answer: yes. Over a 5 month look at data the pages that had external links had a boost organically over those that did not.

Linking out to someone else can be beneficial to your own ranking. It really comes down to trustworthiness. When you link to a relevant, high-ranking source, it shows your readers that what you’re saying is backed up by other industry experts. It’s also a signal to Google that your site is credible because you’re providing valuable content with extra examples to your users. Users love this because they can then get more information from trusted sources and they know that you are also a trusted source of information as well.

Finally, when you link to another site then the other site can see this. This can also be beneficial to your own site should they reach out to have you guest blog for them. The other site may even return the link favor by linking back to your content. It’s a good way for potentially link building or, at the very least, a public relations effort for your brand.

Our team at L2TMedia understands the power of linking, so while we link mostly to a car dealership’s website, we will also make an effort to link to a high authority site with content relevant to what we have written about for our clients. This adds some extra authority to our content and could potentially earn some links back to our automotive dealership blogs.
